Taking a hot air balloon ride with sweeping views of Mount Rainier is not only one of the best things to do in Seattle, but it’s also a once-in-a-lifetime experience that deserves a spot on any PNW bucket list. Picture this: you’re floating beside Mount Rainier at sunrise, the pink glow illuminating its snow-capped peak while lush forests stretch out below. As you rise, you brush against the tips of pine trees, drifting toward cotton candy clouds. It’s nothing short of magical.
What to Expect
Meeting Point:
For a sunrise flight, the meeting time is 4:45 a.m. sharp. Trust me, waking up early is worth it for this incredible experience. After gathering at the Muckleshoot Casino parking lot, we were divided into flight groups while the pilots assessed the best launch sites based on weather conditions.
Loading the Basket:
Upon arriving at the launch site, the morning mist hung in the air, revealing Mount Rainier in the distance. As we watched the balloon inflate, excitement filled the air. Climbing into the basket was a less-than-graceful affair, but once we were all settled, the basket began to rise slowly.
The Flight:
The ascent was serene. We floated just above a pine forest, with other balloons joining us, creating perfect photo opportunities. Our pilot shared interesting facts about the area while soft music played in the background. We enjoyed about 1 hour and 10 minutes in the air, witnessing the mist dissipate and the dawn unfold.
Landing:
After the flight, we landed in a friendly homeowner’s yard, waiting briefly for them to unlock the gate. It was amusing, and upon disembarking, we were treated to a celebratory glass of champagne—a hot air balloon tradition!
